Our History
NeKaMo Camp was founded in 1965 as a Christian camping ministry specifically for girls, utilizing City Union Mission’s Camp in the scenic Ozarks. The motto, “Christ in every phase of a girl’s life,” reflected the founders’ vision to create a place where young girls could grow in their knowledge of Christ and develop an appreciation for His creation.
Foundation and Early Years
Initially part of Camp Cherith, NeKaMo Camp became a member of the Association of Cedarbrook Camps, a network of Christian camps that share common philosophies and mutual objectives aimed at providing the best possible experiences for campers. The Cedarbrook Camps uphold four core values: Spiritual Formation, Relationships and Community, Skill-Building and Individual Development, and Creation Appreciation.
Growth and Development
NeKaMo Camp has consistently focused on fostering a strong Christian foundation, encouraging personal and spiritual growth through daily worship, Bible studies, and devotional times. The camp offers a variety of activities designed to develop campers’ skills and confidence, such as canoeing, rock wall climbing, arts and crafts, and drama. This combination of faith-based activities and skill-building opportunities has made NeKaMo a cherished destination for many young girls over the years.
Re-Launch of Boys Camp
In the summer of 2021, NeKaMo Camp expanded its ministry by re-launching the Boys Camp, thanks to a dedicated core group of men and boys. This addition allowed NeKaMo to serve a broader community while maintaining its commitment to providing a faith-centered camping experience. Boys Camp operates concurrently with the second week of Girls Camp but maintains separate, single-gender experiences to ensure a focused and supportive environment for all campers.
Core Values and Philosophy
NeKaMo Camp’s philosophy is rooted in the belief that outdoor activities and community living can profoundly shape the personal and social development of young people. The camp emphasizes the importance of spiritual growth, community building, skill development, and appreciation of God’s creation. These principles are reflected in the daily schedule and activities, which are designed to balance organized programs, personal exploration, and relaxation.
Location and Facilities
Nestled in the picturesque Ozarks near Warsaw, Missouri, NeKaMo Camp offers an idyllic setting for campers to explore, learn, and grow. The camp is located near the tranquil waters of the Lake of the Ozarks and Truman Reservoir, providing a perfect backdrop for a variety of outdoor activities. The facilities are designed to promote a sense of community and camaraderie, ensuring that campers feel safe and supported throughout their stay.
Commitment to Safety
Safety and well-being are paramount at NeKaMo Camp. The camp follows a comprehensive risk management program, which includes staff training and strict safety protocols for all activities. A registered nurse is always on-site, and additional medical assistance is available nearby, ensuring that campers are well cared for in case of any emergencies.
Looking Ahead
As NeKaMo Camp continues to grow and evolve, its mission remains steadfast: to faithfully present the gospel of Jesus Christ and provide unique opportunities for spiritual and personal growth. By staying true to its core values and fostering a nurturing and supportive environment, NeKaMo Camp aims to equip campers and staff to serve Christ and glorify His name in all they do.
